Prof. Humayun Mughal, Akhter Education Trust, presented with inaugural Pakistan Society Award
The inaugural Pakistan Society Award, to recognise the person or group who in the last year is judged to have contributed most to the advancement of public knowledge and understanding of Pakistan in Britain, was presented at the Society’s 51st Annual Dinner to, Mr. Prof. Humayun Mughal, Chairman of the Akhter Education Trust, for his role in creating the Experience Pakistan project.
Experience Pakistan was launched May 2001 and is open to Year 10 students from all schools, state or public, throughout the UK and is sponsored by the Akhter Education Trust, a subsidiary of Akhter Computers Limited. The competition is an extension to the teaching of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in schools. It consists of creating a multi-media presentation on Pakistan and is consistent with the focus on Citizenship in British education.
So far some 200 teams of students from schools around the country have now taken part in the competition, all doing research about Pakistan – a country which most of them knew nothing about before. So up to 1000 students already have now learned more about Pakistan than they knew previously – as have many of their teachers who gave advice.
Winners of the competition are given a top-level ten-day tour of Pakistan, all expenses paid. They have visited Islamabad for an audience with the President, the historic Khyber Pass, the Karakoram Mountains and Lahore. As well as being given a taste of the culture and colour of Pakistan they get to visit local schools and “Cyber-Twinnings” with their own schools are encouraged.
The Pakistan Society is proud that this innovative scheme was conceived and backed by one of our own members and is one of the best practical examples of the Society’s motto: Bringing Pakistan and Britain Together.
